How to add different page number for different sections in MS Word

Well, this may be a complicated thing for MS Word users.  But, it is very easy. This tutorial will explain to you how to add roman numerals and page numbers in ms word.

Sample word document

There is sample word document with “title, abstract, declaration, acknowledgment, table of content, chapter 01, chapter 02, reference and annexes”.

Document structure
  • Title page – shouldn’t have a page number.
  • Abstract, declaration, acknowledgment and table of content – Roman numerals (I, ii, iii…).
  • Chapter 01, Chapter 02, References and Annexes – Numeric numbers (1,2,3…).

Putting breaks in the word document

Firstly, go to the title page.

Keep cursor like that before next step

Then select “PAGE LAYOUT -> Breaks -> Next Page. (This command divides the word document into two sections).

Then go to table of content page.

Keep the cursor like that before doing the next step

Do the same thing.

Now you have 3 sections in your word document.

Inserting page number in the word document

After sectioning the document, we have to add page numbers. So, go to the title page and select, INSERT -> Page Numbers -> Bottom of Page (select your preferred format).

This command adds page numbers into your word document.

But, there shouldn’t be a page number on the title page. Now we see how to remove page number from the title page.

Select the page number in the title page and then select “Different first-page” option in the design tab.

As you can see, the page number in the title page has gone.

Now we have to change Numeric numbers in abstract, declaration, acknowledgment and table of content pages to Roman numerals. To do that,

Select the page number in the abstract page and select Format Page Numbers option under the Page number.

Choose your preferred options and click OK.

As you can see, page numbers in abstract, declaration, acknowledgment and table of content pages have changed to roman numerals.

Then, select page number in chapter 01 page and do the same thing with you prefered number format.
